Comments

This page covers the All Comments page of the management UI. All comments received by albums are listed here for administrators to review, mark and delete.

Page Structure

  • The Comment settings button on the right of the title bar — opens the comment configuration page, see Comment Settings below.
  • Status filter button group — filters comments by status; each button shows the live count (e.g. Approved (7)).
  • Search box — filters comments by keyword.
  • Bulk actions — the Bulk Actions dropdown plus the Apply button.
  • Comment table — with a record summary and pagination at the bottom (e.g. 7 Items / 1 Pages).

Comment Status

Comments have three statuses:

StatusDescription
ApprovedShown on the front-end album detail page
PendingWaiting for administrator review; not shown on the front end until approved
SpamMarked as spam; not shown on the front end

List Columns

Each row contains the following columns (the Comment, Reviewer, CreateTime and Status headers are clickable to sort):

ColumnDescription
CheckboxUsed by bulk actions; the header checkbox selects the whole page
CommentThe comment text; below it is a link to the album it belongs to
ReviewerThe reviewer's display name and email
CreateTimeWhen the comment was posted
StatusCurrent status (Approved / Pending / Spam)
ActionThe Remove delete button

Single-row Actions

The Action column provides only Remove. Click it, confirm "Are you sure you want to delete this item?" and the comment is permanently deleted.

Bulk Actions

Status changes and bulk deletion are both done via bulk actions: check one or more comments, choose an operation in the Bulk Actions dropdown, click Apply and confirm "Are you sure to operate the records you choose?":

Bulk actionEffect
ApprovedMarks comments as approved and shows them on the front end (this is how pending comments are approved)
PendingSets comments back to pending review
SpamMarks comments as spam so they no longer show on the front end (falsely flagged ones can be restored with Approved)
DeletePermanently deletes the selected comments

Suggested workflow

With the Anti-spam service enabled in the Comment Settings, comments are automatically marked Approved or Spam. You only need to check the Pending and Spam lists regularly and handle stragglers with bulk actions.

Comment Settings

Open it with the Comment settings button in the All Comments title bar (the Comment Settings item in the Settings menu opens the same page). The page has three panels:

Basic Settings

OptionDescriptionDefault
Enable CommentWhether comments are enabled on the album detail pageYes
Require login to commentWhether users must log in before commentingNo
Enable Comment NotificationWhether to email users and administrators about new commentsNo
Number of Comments per pageComments per page in the comment list (items)—
Comment Initial StateThe initial status of new comments: Pending / Approved / Spam / RecyclePending
Enable Anti-spam servicesEnables the Akismet anti-spam service; with it enabled, comments are automatically marked Approved or Spam and the Comment Initial State setting no longer applies — recommendedNo

Disqus Settings

  • Comment Service — the comment service: Normal (the module's built-in comment system, default) or Disqus.
  • Disqus Shortname — when Disqus is selected, enter the Shortname you registered on disqus.com; comments are then hosted by Disqus and all further configuration is done on disqus.com.

Anti-spam services

  • Api Key — your Akismet API key (a free one can be requested).
  • Site URL — your site address (your blog URL).
  • At the bottom of the panel is a filter statistics table (Activated Filter / Name / Check / Spam / Error / Action) showing how many comments AkismetFilter has checked, marked as spam and failed on — a quick way to confirm the service is working.

Akismet anti-spam

For most sites Akismet drastically reduces — or completely eliminates — comment spam. If anything slips through, marking it as Spam in bulk from the comment list helps the service learn.

Next Steps

  • Sharing — push a post to the DNN Journal feed when publishing
